The Mad Dog

I have to admit that I was very sceptical when Colletti traded for Maddux in the final moments of the trade deadline. I wasn't too upset about losing Cesar Izturis. The guy is a career .260 hitter with an on-base percentage below .300 making 3.2 million a year. Sure the guy has a glove, but he has no arm and wants to be a Red Sock with old buddy and fellow terrible hitter Alex Cora. With that said, the Maddux trade to me was just a move for purpose of making a move. Although he gave up six runs (four earned) tonight against the Giants in six innings, the guy has been unbeleivable. Combining the end of his last start against the Giants and the beginning of this start tonight in 'Frisco, the guy retired 32 straight hated ones. For those of you scoring at home, that is a perfect game plus five more outs.

Okay, Eric, as a fellow Dodger fan, I have to agree with you to a certain extent. The Maddox trade was a bit perplexing. I mean I guess Maddox pitching half the time at Dodger Stadium is a plus. He still changes speed very well and crafty pitchers (ala Orel and Fernando and Bob Welch) have always fared pretty well in the past, but he hasn't always been the best postseason pitcher and the Dodgers have to think that's where they'd like to be. All of that being said, Maddox has added some excitement to the pitching staff. Derek Lowe is pitching more confidently. Billingsley is showing some promise and the relief staff has been consistent if not downright impressive since Maddox's arrival.
The concern for me now is whether Lofton and Furcal can consistently get on base. If they can, the Dodgers might hang on to this lead and get to the postseason and then they will probably get the NL Central Winner. Whether it be the Cardinals or the Reds, I think we have a legit shot at winning a series for the first time since 1988. Go Dodgers.
